For the month of November, I have a poster on my door at school that says at the top "I am thankful for..." Each day, the students add one thing to the poster, as do I. My addition yesterday was sunshine, which puzzled one of my students. She questioned why I would write something as simple as that.
Thankfulness and a grateful attitude have to be cultivated, and hopefully, through this exercise, she will learn to appreciate the simple things around her. I took this picture today of our eat-in kitchen because I just love how it looks now that we added the wainscoting and chalkboard paint, but also because of the flowers on the table. Ryan took Vivian to his grandma's house this morning so I could have an hour and a half in the house to myself. I was grateful for that. Nonny sent Ryan home with some potato salad and flowers in a basket for me and Viv. I was grateful for that. The table and chairs in the picture also happen to be from Ryan's grandparents, and the pitcher holding the flowers is from my grandmother. The eggs in the picture are from my sister-in-law, who provides them to us weekly from her hens, free of charge. I am so grateful for generous family.
Looking at this picture, I could think of dozens of other things I'm thankful for, such as the ability to read and write on that chalkboard paint, fruit that would never grow in Rochester but is sitting at my table, two chairs to signify that I do not have to eat dinners alone, and the list goes on and on.
I wonder if my student would find any of the aforementioned things significant. Hopefully, by the end of the month, she will have a different perspective.
And speaking of things I'm grateful for, this little beauty tops the list (right alongside her daddy, of course!).
And you can bet we soaked up the brilliant November sun today.
